Create a blank PDF

Generate an empty PDF in seconds — plain pages to type on, or printable lined, grid and dot paper at true scale. Download it or open it straight in the editor.

How to make a blank PDF

  1. Pick a page size. US Letter fits standard American printers and paper; Half Letter is handy for planners and booklets.
  2. Choose orientation and page count. Landscape works well for charts, seating plans and grid layouts.
  3. Choose a paper style. Plain pages are best for typing; lined, grid and dot pages are for printing and handwriting or for annotating on a tablet.
  4. Create. "Create & download" saves the file immediately. "Create & open in editor" opens plain pages in the SlatePDF editor so you can add text, images or a signature.

Ideas for blank and ruled PDFs

  • Handwriting practice — wide ruled pages for early elementary grades, printed double-sided.
  • Engineering and math — 1/4-inch grid paper for graphing, floor plans and quilting layouts.
  • Bullet journals — dot grid in Half Letter, printed and folded into a booklet.
  • Digital note-taking — a 100-page college-ruled PDF to annotate in GoodNotes, Notability or Samsung Notes.
  • Placeholder pages — a blank page to insert into a packet with the editor or merge with Convert.

Lines and dots are drawn as vector graphics, so they stay crisp at any zoom level and the file stays small — a 100-page grid PDF is typically well under 1 MB.

Frequently asked questions

What page size should I use in the US?

US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) is the default for almost everything printed in the United States. Use US Legal (8.5 × 14 in) for some contracts and court filings, and A4 (210 × 297 mm) when the file is going to Europe, Asia or most other countries.

Can I type on the blank PDF after creating it?

Yes. Click "Create & open in editor" to start typing, drawing, adding images or a signature right away, then export when you are done. "Create & download" just saves the empty file.

What ruling does the lined paper use?

College ruled lines are 9/32 inch (7.1 mm) apart with a red margin line 1.25 inches from the left edge — the same spacing as standard US notebook paper. Wide ruled uses 11/32 inch (8.7 mm).

Are the grid and dot papers to scale?

Yes. Squares and dots are exactly 1/4 inch (0.25 in) apart when printed at 100% / "Actual size". Choose "Fit to page" in the print dialog only if your printer clips the edges.

Is there a page limit?

You can create up to 200 pages at a time. The file is generated in your browser, so even a 200-page grid notebook takes only a second or two.
