Free online PDF editor
Add text, cover mistakes, highlight, draw, insert images and rearrange pages — right in your browser. Your PDF never leaves this device, and exports carry no watermark.
How to edit a PDF online
- Open your file. Drag a PDF onto the box above or click it to browse. If the file is password protected you'll be asked for the open password. Nothing is uploaded — the file is read straight into your browser.
- Pick a tool. Text places a new text box where you click. Whiteout paints an opaque white rectangle over anything you want gone. Highlight lays a translucent yellow band over text, Box draws an outline, and Draw is a freehand pen. Image inserts a PNG, JPG, WebP or GIF such as a logo or stamp.
- Adjust. With Select active, drag any box to move it, drag its corner dot to resize, and press Delete to remove it. Color, font and size apply to new items and to the selected item. Undo walks back up to 60 steps.
- Organize pages. Every page has its own bar: rotate left or right, move up or down, insert a blank page after it, or delete it. Your edits rotate and move with the page.
- Export. Click Export PDF. A new file named
yourfile-edited.pdfdownloads with your edits merged into the pages. There is no watermark on free exports.
Examples of what people fix with it
- A typo on a signed lease addendum — whiteout the wrong date, type "March 1, 2027" in Times at 11 pt so it matches the body text.
- A scanned W-9 that came in sideways — rotate page 1 right, then fill in the blanks with the Text tool.
- Homework or a permission slip — highlight the due date, draw a check mark, and insert a photo of the signed page.
- A 40-page board packet — drag the agenda to the front, delete the duplicate exhibit, and add a blank page for notes.
What this editor can't do (yet)
It doesn't reflow paragraphs, recognize text in scanned images (OCR), or keep fillable form fields interactive after export — form fields are preserved as they were, but text you add is regular page content. For long forms with many fields, fill them in your PDF reader first, then use SlatePDF for pages, annotations and signatures.
Frequently asked questions
Is this PDF editor really free?
Yes. Opening, editing, annotating, drawing, adding images, rearranging pages and exporting are free with no watermark and no account. Pro adds e-signatures, 200 MB files and the server-side merge, split and compress tools.
Can I change the existing text in a PDF?
PDFs store text as positioned glyphs, not paragraphs, so no browser tool can reflow it like a Word file. The reliable approach is to cover the old words with Whiteout and type the replacement on top with the Text tool. Printed and on screen the result looks like an edit.
Are my files uploaded to your server?
No. The editor runs entirely in your browser using pdf.js and pdf-lib. Your PDF is read from your disk into memory on your device and the edited copy is generated there too. Closing the tab discards everything.
Can I open a password-protected PDF?
Yes, if you know the password. The editor asks for it, decrypts the file locally and lets you edit. The exported copy has no password; run it through Protect PDF if you need to lock it again.
Which fonts can I use when adding text?
Helvetica, Times and Courier, the three standard PDF fonts that every reader displays identically. They cover English and Western European characters; characters outside that set are replaced with a question mark.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. The editor works in current Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox on iPhone, iPad, Android and desktop. Drawing works with a finger, stylus or mouse.
