Why your files stay on your device
Most online PDF sites upload your document to their servers, process it there and keep a copy for an hour or a day. That's a poor fit for the documents people actually need to fix in a hurry: tax forms, leases, medical paperwork, pay stubs. SlatePDF's free tools load two open-source libraries — Mozilla's pdf.js to display pages and pdf-lib to write them — and do all the work inside your browser tab. When you close the tab, the file is gone.
Only the Pro tools for merging, splitting, compressing and converting images send files to our server, because those jobs need more memory than many phones have. Even then, files are processed in memory and discarded immediately.
What people use SlatePDF for
- Correcting forms — whiteout a wrong date or address on a PDF from a landlord, school or county office and type the right one in a matching font.
- Protecting attachments — add AES-256 encryption before emailing a W-2, 1099 or signed contract.
- Archiving statements — strip the password from bank and brokerage statements so tax software and backup tools can read them.
- Assembling packets — reorder pages, delete blanks and insert a cover page before you submit a rental or loan application.
- Printing practice paper — generate college-ruled, 1/4-inch grid or dot pages in US Letter.
Free vs. Pro
Editing, page tools, blank PDFs and exporting are free with no watermark. Protect and Unlock are free for 3 files a day, or 10 with a free account. SlatePDF Pro ($7.99/month) adds e-signatures, merge, split, compress, image conversion, unlimited protect/unlock and files up to 200 MB.
Who builds it
SlatePDF is built and maintained by Daniel Brooks, a product engineer in Austin, TX, who got tired of watching relatives upload their tax documents to random websites. Questions or a bug? Get in touch — every message is read by a person.
